On this page you will find some links which directly or indirectly are related to the book. They were all of importance at some stage of the project: the preparation, the walk itself, the thoughts and the development. Also included are some corrections to the text. This page may change (specifically, with additions). |

| Ordonner et Exclure |
Dominique Iogna-Prat, Ordonner et Exclure. Cluny et la société chrétienne face à l'hérésie, au judaïsme et a l'islam (1000 à 1150), Champs/Flammarion, 2000.
This is not a weblink but a book. An important reference. Maybe even the most important. You can order it here (French) or here (English) after you've read a review here, here or here. |

| Fear of freedom |
Erich Fromm, De angst voor vrijheid, Bijleveld, (1941/1999).
Again not a weblink because this, too, is a book. It is the actual cause and source of my journey. First a short review after which you may buy it. |

| History of the Christian Church |
The work of Philip Schaff. Written end of the 19th century. Thorough. Extensive. Fascinating. Maybe a bit dated but a great book.

| De weg naar Santiago de Compostela |
The thesis of Annick Plancke which I used as basis for the Intermezzo about Saint James. In addition to her thesis, Annick made available some other pieces she had written on the subject during her studies. These pieces have been used without reference and less explicitly though they have been influential.
Her email exchange with me while I was writing in Cahors helped me a lot. I thank her for the assistance. |

| Cluny |
There are many links about Cluny. Th link provided here is to the university of Münster. Here is another important link. Through the last link one can find many more. Specifically the information on the architecture of the cloisters is good. Note, for example, the difference between Saint Gall (Sankt Gallen in Switzerland) and Cluny (II) where we find some 200 years' difference. See also séviac.

| Project Gutenberg |
While writing in the perfect isolation of Cahors, the Project Gutenberg proved invaluable. The general link to the project is given on the left. Some of the used books used specifically are listed below (the original title is given; the Gutenberg text is in English).
|
||||||||||||
| Other books |
The Gutenberg project is not ideal or complete. The following books were found elsewhere (Online Books and CCEL are very valuable):
Although it was not used the Internet Archive is also an indispensible source for text, documents and other valuable material on the internet. |

| The anti-Semitism of Luther |
See also Medieval Sourcebook (at the moment not available for copyright reasons). It is not easy to find some books on the Internet and the sources named above are not comprehensive. This is an English translation of the notorious anti-Semitic book by Luther from 1543 (On the Jews and their lies). With all its subsequent influence. Another book which can be difficult to find is Hitler's Mein Kampf (Engels and an explanation). An analysis of that book, the Christian elements it contains and a comparison with Luther's book would be interesting but it would go beyond this project. Nazi Germany is not the definition, beginning and end of evil. The origin lies deeper. Very deep. See also Ordonner et Exclure. After the councel of Nicea (325), the Roman emperor Constantin wrote a letter which can be called straightforwardly anti-Semitic (see also the Medieval Sourcebook). |

| Pope Pius XII |
One of the themes in Not to Santiago and back again is the persecution of the Jews. Iogna-Prat shows something of the origins and the role of the church in that persecution. Pius XII was Pope during the largest persecution and massmurder in the history of mankind. The way he acted is still the subject of a lot of discussion. The position adopted in Not to Santiago and back again is no doubt debatable. The article on the left shows one of the most objective summaries of the problem I found on the web. In 1999 the International Catholic-Jewish Historical Commission was formed. The First Interim Report provides a list of questions which throw a lot of light on the problemarea. In 2001 the Commision was abandoned because of conflict and the controversy between the Jews and the Vatican continues Here you can find the infamous and much criticised Christmas message of Pius XII from 1942. I challenge the reader to find the fragment which can be seen as criticism of the massive persecutions and massmurder by the Nazis - which Pius XII knew about - and to weigh that fragment's importance against the whole of the message. |

| Benedicts rule | The link provides the Rule as it is currently available on the web. Changes made to the text of Benedict of Aniane are not indicated. I am interested in finding research or an annotated text on the web (as a book, it may exist). The Rule itself is available in several languages. Also on the site of the Benedictine order itself. And the article about the Rule in the Catholic Encyclopedia. |
||||||||||||
| The Catholic Encyclopidia | The Catholic Encyclopidia is a good on-line source for quick information about Catholicism. The data is clearly written from a Catholic viewpoint. To be used with some caution but indispensable for basic hagigrafy of popes, saints and data from before 1914. (This electronic version was originally published in a paper form in 1914 and has not been revised.) |
||||||||||||
| Medieval Sourcebook | Not to be missed by the amateur historian and by students. Selected original documents in translation. Lots of nice things to find (e.g. the papal bull Unam Sanctam which you can find here too, with all papal Encyclicals). |
||||||||||||
| Science History | From the same source as the Medieval Sourcebook. |
||||||||||||
| Kirchenlexikons | Biographisch-Bibliographisches Kirchenlexikons (in German). Lots of information about people connected to church history. |

| Séviac | The excavation of a roman villa near Séviac. The villa as a blueprint for the cloister. The thermal baths as blueprint of the Roman church with three apsidal chapels. |

The Constitutions of:

The sources of the Constitutions analysed. Special attention in this context need to be given to the USA PATRIOT ACT.
Notice the First Amendment (in the Bill of Rights) of the USA:
And compare this to Article II-52 (2003 version) of the EU Constitution:

| Speech Chirac | A speech made by Chirac on 17 december 2003 (while I was writing the book) on the topic of not allowing Muslim girls to wear headscarves in school. There is also a translation in Dutch. The French Embassy has a good introduction to Laïcité. Here is the French text from Wikipedia. |

| Timelines of Maurice Griffe | Valuable as the chronological sequence of events are important to the story. The following parts were used:

| Evolution |
Not to Santiago and back again is evolution.
Evolution is central in the book. The concept of evolution is diametrically opposed to the creationism of the Monotheististic religions. It seemed a good idea to show the websites of both sides. | ||||||||||||
| One nation under God | This is the article by Siobhan McDonough in The Washington Times. It is only one of many results, if one searches the Internet with the query One nation under God. The issue which divides the US and thus - at this moment - of the world. Have fun! Also not bad: Theocracy Watch |

| Skeptics annotated | The Bible. The Quran. The Book of Mormon. In case you would like to look something up. |

| No christianity | A site with a lot of information, articles and links for atheists and dissenters. Also the Secular web. Of an unequalled quality and not to be misinterpretedis this lecture by Bertrand Russell: Why I am not a Christian. |
||||||||||||
| The power of nightmares | A beautiful three hour BBC documentary on the origin of fear as key political tool. Yes, the same theme as in Not to Santiago and back again, although the documentary starts off in 1946. The documentary is from 2004, the same year the book was written. An indication that my way of thinking is not unique. Wikipedia article on the documentary. A discussion. A direct download. |

| The library of Congress | Access to information on US law. Additionally there is Thomas.Hugely accessible and open; an example to a lot of other countries. |
||||||||||||
| Positive atheist quotes | No comment. |

| Interview with God | No? Included for completeness. For anyone who still has a question: see the God FAQ. See also Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion. Book and TV documentary. |

Corrections: As a consequence of the speed with which the book was written (within six weeks everything except the Third Voyage was on paper) and its speedy publication, the book contains more errors than I bargained for. It is the consequence of inexperience in writing and publishing books. It is a pity but it is not possible to correct typographical and similar errors here. For a subsequent edition, attention will be given to correcting these mistakes. |

| On Psalms (Wikipedia) | In Not to Santiago and back again there is a reference to Psalm 139, Verses 21 & 22 on page 274 (Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.) The footnote indicates a deviation in numbering and I point to a possible printing error. This is wrong. A correct explanation of the French use of 138 en the Dutch (and English) use of 139 is given in the Wikipedia article and has to do with the use of Hebrew and Greek source texts. |

The Right is more precious than peace |
At the monument in Varennes en Argonne I describe the inscription as Truth is more important than Peace. This is incorrect. It is the quote on the left which comes from the speech by Woodrow Wilson on April 2, 1917 in which he declares that the USA will participate in WWI. |

| The Chasséen | Following my resumption of the walk from Nolay, after Santenay I walked through a Neolithic camp, in the community of Chassey. The camp dates from 5000-3500 BC and not 1500 - 500 BC as erroneously written in the book. |
